Spotify announced the global launch of its new tool; video podcasts on their platform. This function can be used by the majority of free and paid users, either on desktop computers and on mobile devices. The content will be created by a select group of podcasts creators.
With this new update, they satisfy a complaint that many consumers had long time ago. Unlike YouTube, where only paid subscribers can listen to musice and make different uses of their devices at the same time, Spotify allows all its users to reproduce the visual content, which is synchronized with the audio and is maintained playing while they are using other apps, or even if they lock their phone. The video will be an additional component, not a replacement for audio; which means that the podcast can be downloaded and listened without connection, if necessary.
While it is true that podcasts usually have a video option, Spotify didn’t have a way for creators to share them on the platform. Therefore, they could upload their audio podcast on Spotify and other distribution services, and their videos had to be shared on YouTube. Now with this upgrade, Spotify sees it as an opportunity to increase its audience.
On the other hand, the videos will give Spotify the opportunity to sell advertising. But the platform has not given details, because even though they are considering it, the idea is still in its early stages. At the moment, the creators of podcasts are the only ones who will be able to upload their own content, and in the future this feature will be expanded.
